First
of all, the most important sign of wealth, possessing a large amount of money,
has become an ambition of many people round the world, especially of the
younger generation to which I belong. These days, wealthy people have a very
bad reputation. Whereas billionaires such as Bill Gates and Warren donate huge
amounts of money, the “average multi-millionaire or billionaire” becomes a
concept of enemy for the ordinary people. That happens, however, for the reason
that higher revenue allows one to consume more goods and services. As a result,
that excites envy. On the other hand, happiness is not just set by one single
factor but many others. From my perspective, however, happiness does not always
increase in direct proportion to the amount of money. Either way, it is
indisputable that money has a brief effect on life satisfaction, especially after
we have got enough money to please our fundamental needs. Given these points, I
don’t think that it´s somehow possible to “buy happiness”, so money isn’t
everything, but it helps. Conversely, we should be aware that it is
friendships, good health, and family that truly bring us happiness to which we
aspire.

HOLLYWOOD MOVIES
In
my opinion, Hollywood movies on 'true
stories' don't necessarily mean they are true. It is because a day after
Ben Affleck's Argo won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the Daily Mail in
not-so-merry-old England posted an article on its website hitting out at the
movie for what it called a "long list of films that bend the truth to suit
Hollywood". It is a British newspaper after all, so no prizes for guessing
what truths the writer accused Hollywood of bending. For those who are
unfamiliar with the movie, Argo tells the story of a rescue mission to bring
several staff members of the United States embassy in Teheran to safety when
Iranian students stormed the embassy during the country's revolution in 1979. Affleck's
flick was torn apart because of one short sentence in the movie, where an
American Central Intelligence Agency officer said British diplomats had turned
away the US embassy staffers. The truth of the matter was that the Americans
were told not to enter the British embassy as it, too, was surrounded by an
angry mob. So, it can be prove that not all of the Hollywood movies were true
and people really need to know that watching a Hollywood movie "based on a
true story" doesn't necessarily mean you are getting the truth of the
truth story but just get the imagination about the story.
STEREOTYPING

“I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine
ladies instead of rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm
waters all our lives.”
― Jane Austen, Persuasion

We as a human always
practice the stereotyping. But please not to be confused with a stereotypy. A definition
of stereotyping is a thought that may be adopted about specific types of
individuals or certain ways of doing things, but that belief may or may not
accurately reflect reality. However, this is only a fundamental psychological
definition of a stereotype. Within and across different psychology disciplines,
there are different concepts and theories of stereotyping that provide their
own expanded definition. Some of these definitions share commonalities, though
each one may also harbor unique aspects that may complement or contradict the
others.
For
example as a girl, we always set in our mind that our boyfriends need to treat
us all the time even though they are not supposes to do so. In fact, we are not
supposes to think in that particular way but that is our stereotyping behavior.
Maybe we already try our hard to avoid this particular behavior but it doesn’t
work because that is our own identity. So, just let it be. =)
PRISONERS TO GET VARSITY-LEVEL COURSES
According to the
excerpt dated 3 March, 2013 taken from news Strait Times which is prisoners to
get varsity-level courses, I was agree with the government that prisoners
should be given a chances to improve themselves. They need to be helped to make
sure that they will be somebody for themselves, their family and especially for
their beloved country. As a good society, we should give a support towards them
and need to help them while they need us. In my opinion, everyone should have a
second chance in their life. It is because, we can prove to the others that we
can make a change in our life. In my opinion, this program is good for
ex-prisoners because there are no other college will receive them to study there
while they know their status. So, by launched the programs all of the
ex-prisoners can have a chances to further their studies. It is good for them
and their country because statistics shown that department had succeeded in
reducing the level of repeat (those returning after being released from jail)
to only 7.97 per cent last year, which is lower than the 10 per cent estimated
by the ministry. So, it is a good news
for us as a society. We should be proud because of our government already have
a potential solution towards this problem. Even though this particular program might
need a lot of money but it give a good impact towards them which is they can
try to improve themselves.
MY EXPECTATION
My expectations for this
subject, Critical Literacy, are that I would not be able to learn certain part
that is needed in this subject and that I would likewise will not be able to
make use of them in the future. By the way, I am expecting that the lecturer is kind
and understanding, but not in a way that would warrant her to not giving
everything easily to students but instead would really utilize effective
teaching methods that would both engage us to do our best and lead us to
learning without being overly strict. Beside that, I expect that the quizzes, activities, assignments
and discussions would be hard to understand and answer. I expect that taking up
Critical Literacy can make me and all of the students became stress because the word ‘critical’
give a bad impression towards us. I expect that the work that been given by
lecturer will be hard to complete because most of my senior said that have to
think very critically in order to complete it. I really feel unluckily by
taking this subject. I expect that before we do our activities, the lecturer
need to give a complete and clear instruction to make sure that students will
not confuse. However, after I
already be in class and start learning in this subject, it not too hard
like what I have thought. But it is need a lot of reading to grab all of
the topics. Lastly, I do hope that I can
master in this subject by always read it and I do also hope that I can
score in
this subject .
